Support

Definition: the basic support of the painting on wood refers to the kind of wood used in order to create paintings on panels. This painting can have a support formed by one or various pieces of wood fitted together by different linking systems (pegs, tongued and grooved blocks, etc.) and the type of wood which will be used depends on the geographic situation where the panels will be constructed.

MONTART CREATION carries out a study on the location where the works will have to be situated, and according to the results, we will choose the adequate wood together with the different treatments so as to avoid possible deterioration of the panel, such as attack of fungi, insects or any other natural problem of the wood (cracks, etc.).

Linen fabric cover

Definition: Type of fabric which, once fixed to the panel, is used as a support for the paintings. Usually, it is of natural fibre and can have different kinds of warps.

MONTART CREATION uses 100% natural linen of the taffeta and open weave type as this fabric undergoes less movement due to atmospheric humidity in its lifespan.

At the same time we pay special attention to our fabric, as we protect it against attack of possible fungi that could occur with the time. We fix it to the panel by using the method of the Great Italian Masters of the Renaissance.

Preparatory layer

Definition: Subsequent layers to the linen fabric cover with more loading content. This evens the painting surface and facilitates the adhesion of the painting to the support. It also reduces the effects of movements of the support on the painted layer.

MONTART CREATION uses the natural "recipes" of the great masters and the necessary chemical substances for its preservation. The application is made by different layers of agglutinating agent and load until to found the appropiate surface. For custom-designed works, the layer can also be coloured, leaving a colour background.

The use of the natural "recipes" of the great masters is necessary to guarantee the adhesion of the painting to the preparatory layer and so avoiding possible detachments.

Preparatory drawing

Definition: Drawing is prior to painting in order to execute the final work. These drawings are usually made with charcoal pencils or chalk.

MONTART CREATION carries out studies prior to the preparatory drawing. This means, we make sketches on paper or cardboard before any type of drawing on the preparatory layer is made in order to determine the final painting. Once the subject and painting is chosen, we create the preparatory drawing on the canvas with charcoal pencil.

Gold or silver layer

Definition: The gold and silver plating technique consists of applying gold and silver plates onto the previously prepared surface.

MONTART CREATION uses the gold plating technique with water by first applying a specific type of clay onto the area to be gold-plated. The first layer consists of yellow ochre bole and the second layer of red ochre bole. Thin gold plates (22K) are then applied onto these 2 previous layers by the classical water technique.

The same type of application can be carried out with silver plates, but on black bole.

According to the preparatory type of drawing, engravings can be applied onto the gold or silver surface, i.e. by means of different types of gravers (burins). This was the technique used during the 13 th to the 15 th century.

Painting layer

Definition: The paint is applied with paintbrush or palette-knife, in tempera or oil. It is applied in consecutive layers until the work is executed.

MONTART CREATION uses quality paint in tempera and oil, applied with paintbrush or palette-knife. The painting technique is the one used by the great masters and whereby we guarantee a quality finishing of the work.

The great masters used these highly studied painting techniques by applying consecutive layers any of which had a determined function. First the layers are applied in tempera with intermediate varnishes in order to temper the work and finally the painting in oil is made to achieve a high- quality finishing.

Protective varnish coating

Definition: The finishing varnish is a varnish layer applied with a palette-knife or spray, which gives the painting a protective layer.

MONTART CREATION applies varnish of natural origin which is prepared in our workshop, containing adequate ingredients in order to delay its natural turning yellow due to ultraviolet rays.

No current chemical varnishes are used and this way we can guarantee that the varnish does not penetrate the painted layer and therefore does not have reverse effects, as the natural varnish remains on the surface.
