Stretcher

Definition: A wooden or aluminium frame holds the canvas with a system of joint angles fitted with wedges or screws that allows stretching the canvas.
According to the size of the work a crosspiece with wedges or screws must be added as well.

MONTART CREATION uses the filgood type wooden stretcher (copyright Bonfil company), as the fitting area is much more resistant than the one of the Spanish or European type stretcher. We also offer aluminium stretchers on customer request.

Our company is known and appreciated for the use of quality wood which receives adequate treatment in order to avoid any attack of fungi or other insects during the lifespan of the stretcher.

Canvas

Definition: The type of fabric used to hold the paintings can be of different natural or synthetic fibres and of different kinds of warps.

MONTART CREATION uses 100% natural linen of the taffeta and open weave type, since this is the fabric that undergoes less change during lifespan caused by environmental/atmospheric humidity.

Furthermore, our fabrics receive special attention so as to be protected against attacks of fungi that could harm them with the time.

For the fitting stainless steel staples are used in order to avoid oxidation.

primer layer

Primer layer

Definition: The first layer applied to the canvas, once fixed to the stretcher, consists of a determined quantity of agglutinating agent that smoothens the surface and makes it less porous.

MONTART CREATION uses the "recipe" (method) of the great masters of the Italian Renaissance, i.e. combines the natural ingredients of the know-how with other chemical ingredients that guarantee the quality of the layer, so avoiding its putrefaction.

Preparatory layer

Definition: Subsequent layers to the primer layer with more loading content. This evens the paint surface and facilitates the adhesion of the paint to the support. It also reduces the effects of movements of the support on the painted layer.

MONTART CREATION uses - the same as with the primer layer - the natural "recipes" of the great masters and the necessary chemical substances for its conservation. The application is made by different layers of agglutinating agent and load until to found the appropiate surface. For custom-designed works, the layer can also be coloured, leaving a colour background.

The use of the natural "recipes" of the great masters is necessary to guarantee the adhesion of the paint to the ground layer and so avoiding possible detachments.

preparatory drawing

Preparatory drawing

Definition: Drawing is prior to paint in order to execute the final work. These drawings are usually made with charcoal pencils or chalk.

MONTART CREATION carries out studies prior to the ground drawing. This means, we make sketches on paper or cardboard before any type of drawing on the ground layer is made in order to determine the final painting. Once the subject and painting is chosen, we create the ground drawing on the canvas with charcoal pencil.

Painting layer

Definition: The paint is applied with brush or palette knife, in tempera or oil. It is applied in consecutive layers until the work is executed.

MONTART CREATION uses quality paint in tempera and oil, applied with brush or palette knife. The paint technique is the one used by the great masters and whereby we guarantee a quality finishing of the work. The great masters used these highly studied paint techniques by applying consecutive layers any of which had a determined function. First the layers are applied in tempera with intermediate varnishes in order to temper the work and finally the painting in oil is made to achieve a high-quality finishing.

Protective varnish coating

Definition: The protective varnish coating is a varnish layer applied with a thin varnish brush or spray, which gives the painting a protective layer.

MONTART CREATION applies varnish of natural origin which is prepared in our workshop, containing adequate ingredients in order to delay its natural turning yellow due to ultraviolet rays.

No current chemical varnishes are used and this way we can guarantee that the varnish does not penetrate the paint layer and therefore does not have reverse effects, as the natural varnish remains on the surface.
